How to read a Supplement Facts label

A practical guide to serving size, amounts per serving, Daily Value, and the details outside the facts panel.

Whole for Good editorial guide · Content version July 18, 2026

1

Begin with serving size

Every number on the panel is tied to the listed serving. Compare products only after checking whether the serving is one capsule, several capsules, a scoop, or another amount.

2

Read amount and % Daily Value separately

Amount per serving tells you how much is present. Percent Daily Value is a reference point for the general population; it is not a personalized target. Some ingredients do not have an established Daily Value.

3

Keep the rest of the label in view

Directions, other ingredients, allergen statements, cautions, storage instructions, and contact information can be as important as the front-panel name.
